“Do You Have Any State Forms?”

Library Tales: Cartoon by Mike Ferman

Every year starting January first to April 15th we provide free tax forms for people to come and pick up. It always amazes me that there are people in their thirties and forties who still don’t know the difference between any of the tax forms. Some people at least know that they need a federal form and a state form.

One woman came up to the front desk and asked me if we had any state forms.

I replied, “Yes, the Missouri forms are over there on the tax form table in the wire wrack.”

“But do you have any state forms?”

“Yes ma’am, the Missouri forms are in the wire wrack. The long form is the blue one and the short form is the pink one.” To which she screamed at me and pounded on the desk with each word, “STATE, STATE, I said STATE!” “Ma’am, the last time I checked, Missouri IS a state.”
